Why Lodge?
Here at Lodge, we believe in hanging out.
Revolutionary, we know.
And while nothing we build can actually replace sitting in the same room with your friends, stealing somebody’s snacks, arguing over what to watch, and making eye contact after someone says something unbelievably stupid…
we can at least make being apart feel a little more like being together.
So we looked at the existing options.
And they were…
They worked.
But they felt like tools for meetings.
Buttons. Grids. Meeting IDs. Waiting rooms. Tiny microphone icons silently judging you.
Why does talking to your friends feel like joining a quarterly earnings call?
So we decided to make something different.
Not another meeting app.
Not another social network.
Not another place filled with followers, likes, feeds, algorithms, streaks, engagement metrics, and whatever else the internet has decided we apparently need this week.
We wanted a room.
A place you and your friends could actually come back to.
- A room with couches.
- Pictures on the walls.
- Inside-joke sound effects.
- A completely unnecessary duck noise.
- A photo booth for the memories nobody asked to be included in.
- A door you can actually knock on.
Because apparently nobody else was brave enough to put a door in a video calling app.
So we took the technology that already existed—video calling, realtime communication, browsers, WebRTC, servers, probably an irresponsible amount of JavaScript—and asked:
What if we made it fun?
That became Lodge.
You can still make a normal call.
Sometimes you just need to call somebody. We’re not going to make you walk through a virtual living room and water a plant before answering the phone.
But when you want to actually hang out?
You can go to your Room.
And when everybody leaves, the Room quietly goes to sleep until somebody comes back.
You don’t need to know that part.
It’s basically the fridge light.
We aren't trying to replace real life.
Go outside.
Seriously.
Hang out with your friends in person.
Lodge cannot give you pizza.
Lodge cannot drive you somewhere.
Lodge cannot throw something at your friend from across the room.
Technology has limits.
But people aren't always in the same place.
And when they're not, we think talking online should feel a little less like:
“You are now connected to Meeting 847-291-64.”
and a little more like:
“Yo, everyone’s in the room.”
Is all of this necessary?
Absolutely not.
A duck button is objectively unnecessary.
So are posters.
So is putting your friends' cameras on a virtual couch.
So is spending twenty minutes picking wallpaper for a room only six people will ever see.
And yet…
life would be significantly worse without unnecessary things.
So we made them anyway.
Okay but actually, what is this?
Is Lodge free?
Yes. Lodge is free to use — no subscription, no per-minute charges, and no premium tier gating video calls with your friends.
How many people can be on a call?
Lodge calls and Rooms hold 2 to 6 people. It's built for small friend groups hanging out, not large meetings or webinars.
Do I need to download an app?
No. Lodge runs entirely in your browser using WebRTC — no app store, no install, no update prompts.
How is Lodge different from Zoom or Google Meet?
Zoom and Google Meet are built for scheduled meetings: meeting IDs, waiting rooms, host controls, and (on Zoom's free plan) a 40-minute limit on group calls. Lodge has none of that — you call a friend directly, or open a persistent Room your group can drop back into anytime, with no meeting to schedule and no time limit.
How is Lodge different from Discord or FaceTime?
Discord is built around servers and channels for communities and gaming. FaceTime is built around Apple devices. Lodge is neither — it's a private, cross-platform, browser-based space for one specific friend group, with no server to manage and no platform requirement on either end.
Can strangers join my Room?
No. Lodge is invite-only by design — only friends you've explicitly added can call you or enter a Room you're in, and there are no public or discoverable rooms.
Wasn’t this called Kinroom?
It was. Lodge is the same app with a new name — same accounts, same friends, same Rooms, nothing lost in the move. The old kinroom.king56bob.com address has been retired, so update any bookmark pointing there to lodge.king56bob.com.
